Buku Haram seeks all of Nigeria to convert to Shariah Law

Islamist Militant group Boko Haram raided a prison in Northern Nigeria last week, resulting in massive jailbreak of some 700 inmates.

A massive man hunt ensued after the jailbreak, and Nigerian police were able to recapture 35 of the escapees. The prison was initially attacked by a small army of about 200 Boko Haram soldiers. Boko Haram, literally translated “Western Education is a sin”, seeks the totally imposition of their interpretation of Shariah law, throughout all 36 states of Nigeria.

About Boko Haram
Shariah Law is universal through the Islamic faith, but interpretations differ. The two primary sources of Islamic law are specifically, the divine revelations laid out in the Qur’an, and the sayings and examples set by habits of the Prophet Muhammad. “Figh” interprets and tries to answer the questions not directly addressed by the two primary sources, translated to “deep understanding” or “full comprehension”. Boko Haram was founded in 2002, by Ustaz Mohammed Yusu. His group made it a practice to kill police officers and anyone else who would oppose the goal of Shariah Law throughout all of Nigeria.

In a 2009 interview with the BBC, Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf stated he believed ideas such as ‘the world is a sphere’ is contrary to Islam and should be rejected, along with theory that rain comes from water evaporated by the sun. He was killed in 2010 at 39 years old by Nigerian security forces in Maiduguri, while attempting to escape custody.

The hunt continues for the remaining 650 or so inmates that were freed. The Bauchi state governor, Malam Isa Yuguda, ordered a house to house search for escapees still at large.

In a press release from Governor Malam:

“We are embarking on this exercise because the members of this sect must be brought to justice. We cannot fold our arms and allow these people continue to disrupt the peace of the state.” he stated, “Members of the Boko Haram sect who killed and maimed innocent citizens without any moral justification for doing so, will be punished for their sinful acts. This time around, they will not escape.”
